Jaundice & Phototherapy

  • Jaundice is a common condition in newborns that causes a yellowish tint to the skin and the whites of the eyes. It happens when a baby’s liver isn’t yet fully mature and can’t process bilirubin (a waste product) as efficiently as an adult’s liver. In most healthy, term babies, typical jaundice does not require treatment and resolves on its own as the liver matures.

How to tell if your baby might have jaundice:

    - Yellow tint: A yellow color on the face, chest, and then the entire body, including the palms and soles.

    - Onset timing: Jaundice usually appears 2–3 days after birth and may peak around day 3–5 in healthy term babies. It can appear earlier in premature or at-risk babies.

    - Scleral check: Yellowing of the whites of the eyes can indicate jaundice.

    - Where it shows: If yellowing is limited to the face and becomes more pronounced on the chest or belly, monitor closely.

    What you should do:

    - If you notice yellowing beyond the face (especially on the torso), or if your baby is not feeding well, is lethargic, or you’re unsure, contact your pediatrician promptly.

    - Routine newborn checks often include bilirubin screening. If you have concerns between visits, seek guidance from your healthcare provider.

    - Seek medical care if jaundice spreads to the arms, legs, or abdomen, or if your baby shows signs of illness.

    When to seek urgent care:

    - If your baby is under 24 hours old with jaundice.

    - If jaundice is accompanied by poor feeding, dehydration, fever, or a limp/weak cry.

    Note:

    - This information is educational and not a substitute for medical advice. Please consult your pediatrician for a professional evaluation and guidance specific to your baby.

  • Elevated bilirubin levels that may require intervention such as enhanced feeding to promote bilirubin elimination, repeat bilirubin testing, and in some cases phototherapy or inpatient monitoring as directed by your pediatrician. Your clinician will determine the appropriate plan based on bilirubin level, age in hours, weight, and overall health. Immediate concerns include signs of dehydration, poor feeding, lethargy, or fever. Phototherapy treatment may be recommended, your healthcare team will explain the rationale, process, and what to expect.

    Notes:

    - This information is educational. Always rely on your pediatrician for medical advice tailored to your baby.

Breast Pump Rentals

Sign an Agreement: A rental agreement will need to be signed.

Deposit: A deposit may be required, depending on the pump.

Pick-up/Delivery: Arrange for pick-up or delivery as needed.

  • Yes, for our durable medical equipment (DME) program, rental coverage depends on your insurance plan. We are contracted with: TriWest, First Health and BCBS of Arizona

If you have one of these insurers, you may have pump rental covered when you have a prescription from your provider.

    A few notes:

    - Coverage varies by plan and may require a prescription and/or medical necessity.

    - We can verify your benefits and help submit the necessary documentation.

    - If not covered, we can discuss affordable rental options and payment plans.

If you’d like, share your insurer and plan details and we’ll check coverage for you.

  • Medical necessity is the justification an insurer uses to determine whether a pump rental should be covered under a DME (durable medical equipment) benefit. Common factors include:

    - Medical justification: Documented need related to a breastfeeding or infant health condition (e.g., delayed milk supply, separation from baby, premature or low-weight infant, latch or nursing difficulties).

    - Provider prescription: A written order or prescription from a licensed healthcare provider specifyingPump type and rental duration.

    - Treatment plan: A documented plan from a clinician outlining how the pump will be used to support breastfeeding or infant health goals.

    - Medical necessity criteria: Each insurer’s criteria, which may include evidence of medical need, prescribed duration, and demonstrated impact on health outcomes.

    - Documentation of attempted alternatives: In some cases, prior attempts with non-insured supplies may be reviewed.

    - Benefit rules: Some plans require diagnostic codes (ICD-10) that align with covered breast pump use, and may have specific quantity or duration limits.

    What you can do:

    - Have your healthcare provider submit a formal prescription with the medical necessity rationale and the requested rental period.

    - We can help verify your benefits and gather required documentation to align with your insurer’s criteria.

    - If coverage isn’t approved, we can discuss alternative options and payment plans.

If you’d like, share your insurer and plan details, and we can review the specific medical necessity criteria that apply to you.
